Lilla Rogers MATS Bootcamp

A secret journal for collecting treasure- thoughts, ideas and dreams. The mini for the first assignment was to sketch and doodle Edwardian brooches.

Because I have to follow specific briefs for my commercial illustration work, this part was the most fun. We had no idea at this stage what the project was, so it was easy to concentrate on the jewels. My doodles went in two directions- the more elegant jewellery and the insect characters. As a children’s book illustrator it was tempting to turn the Edwardian insect brooches into characters.

The sketches turned into icons.

With this first assignment I worked in my favourite style that I have been using since I started illustrating. It doesn’t work for all topics, but it does suite the shimmery, sparkly jewels well.

The first option was a white background. I decided to go with the jewels because it was closer to the brief. I plan to get back to the insect characters soon to make a night garden setting for them. I will add plants, stars and some fireflies.

Then I tried a busy collection of jewellery on a dark velvet background.

After looking at the great journals that the other student shared in the Facebook group, I decided to simplify the design. I thought more about what journals are for. To me journals are for collecting treasures: thoughts, ideas, dreams and sparkly secrets.
